The Salt Lake Tribune stated that "Death Coming Up the Hill" was one of the best new war books for young adults. Do you agree? What are your thoughts about the book? Why do you think this? i do agree with them, because this book is about a young adult too, which can inspire them to read it , and also to knew about a young adult like them but in a different time period.

My thought about this novel is I like it, the way it was written in haikus, is so powerful and interested at the same time. it has 17 syllables like a haiku. each chapter has a week number, and a number of people who died in the vietnam war,
it mention everything which make it interested to read
especially if you wanna know more about the vietnam war.

I agree with you, Mowada. I think the fact that this book is from the perspective of a 17 year old can help a young adult themselves understand what it was like to live during that time. I really liked that it was written in haikus too and thought it was very interesting.

I really believe that this book is a good book. It shows the feelings of a house with people who oppose the war, and people who approve the war. It also has a little love story and it really helped me understand a little more on the war

I also really enjoyed this book, the love story made the sadness Ashe felt towards his family and life easier to deal with because he had someone by his side that was there to comfort him and showed him that although his parents didn't love each other love is still possible.
DeleteI also enjoyed this text! I thought it was perfect for your age group how it layered everything from war, to family issues to a love story. I think the book had just enough distracting from the main plot that it kept it engaging and interesting. It is definitely one that can bring out lots of conversation.

ReplyDeleteI thought the book was very interesting as well and I had never read a book written in haiku form so I thought it had a great twist on the traditional novel. Is there any specific parts in the book that were especially powerful to you that you can cite?

Breighonna I like the point you began, but I wish you would have elaborated with more of your thoughts and/or used textual evidence. I agree we do not get too see what is really going on inside America in regards to the war, but also outside. We don't get the details and sometimes not the true (full) story. Death Coming up the Hill allowed us inside the head of a soldier, as he struggles to make a huge decision of physically entering the war.
